Although creation points to the Creator (Ps 19:1), it does not provide a complete picture of His attributes and will. Creation was placed under a curse when Adam and Eve sinned, so at times it may present a distorted picture of God. For example, the recurring seasons show that He is faithful and benevolent, but natural disasters may lead humans to picture the Creator as cruel. However, David states: “The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.” (Ps 19:7)
David didn’t have the whole Bible to consult, but he had the full record of the statutes and precepts God had given to Israel. The law that God had given to Israel in written form was flawless. As such, it can revive the soul. It gives life to those who heed it and revival when the human spirit is downcast. “He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” (Ps 23:3)
David also affirms that “the testimony of the LORD is sure”. This is a reference, in part, to the Ten Commandments. They impart wisdom to the humble; those who exercise a childlike submission to them. The Ten Commandments imparted to Israel the wisdom to know right from wrong. “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Ps 119:105)
However, Israel did not always choose to obey them. “How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing and fools hate knowledge? Turn to my reproof, Behold, I will pour out my Spirit on you; I will make my Words known to you.” (Prov 1:22-23) Here He promises to pour His Spirit on us and give us an understanding of His precepts. “The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.”
Father God, I thank You for Your Word and for You giving us a way through faith in Jesus to come boldly to Your throne of grace to obtain mercy and grace in our time of need. Dear Lord, You have shown me most recently that I constantly need Your mercy and grace, and I must stay on the vine and abide in You. Thank You for this testimony that makes my worldly knowledge shown to be inept in the face of Your wisdom. Thank You for Your Word which lights my way in this world and restores my soul and gives me rest. In the precious name of Jesus, amen.
