This morning I was thinking about the lyrics to Unspoken’s song, “Reason”. “This year’s felt like four seasons of winter; And you’d give anything you think to feel the sun. Always reaching, always climbing, Always second guessing the timing. But God has a plan, a purpose in this; You are His child and don’t you forget…He put that hunger in your heart; He put that fire in your soul; His love is the reason to keep on believing”.

God has set eternity in all of our hearts (Eccl 3:11). Is it any wonder when we don’t keep our eyes set on Him that we feel a void that we try to fill with the trappings the world offers? God made humanity for His eternal purpose, and only God can fulfill our desire for eternity.

Sadly, too many spend their lives looking for something other than God to fill their longing for meaning. But in pursuing these things that are not eternal, they remain unfulfilled and wonder why their lives never seem satisfactory. There is no doubt that many people pursuing things other than God achieve a measure of “happiness” for a time. But the Lord wants so much more for us; for us to find true satisfaction in Him. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matt 5:6)

If you find yourself unsatisfied today, take a look at that for which you are thirsting. Perhaps you’re “following your heart”, reaching for the stars here on earth, and yet never finding true satisfaction. Here’s the truth about our hearts: “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?” (Jer 17:9)

Perhaps it’s time to lay “following your heart” at the feet of Jesus, and instead hunger and thirst for His righteousness. He put that hunger in your heart that only He can satisfy.
