Yesterday we talked about what it really means to be free: “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” (2 Cor 3:17) Upon our faith in Christ, the Spirit of the Lord came to dwell in each of us. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Cor 3:16)
At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus proclaimed that He was the One the prophets prophesied about: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18-19)
Those of us who are in Christ have had our chains to sin broken by our Lord and Savior. And we are no longer slaves to sin, but children of God-His heirs! “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’ Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” (Gal 4:4-7)
Given that we have been freed and adopted into the family with full benefits of His children and heirs, what should our response be? We are to live our lives as this is the truth, because it is! We aren’t to give in to worldliness, but keep ourselves holy because He is holy (1 Pet 1:16). “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.” (1 Pet 2:16-17)
Father thank You for the reminder to walk in Your truth today. I thank You for adopting me and giving me enlightenment in the hope of Your calling. Lord, today help me to remember in each moment that I am Your child, and free from all bondage of the prince of the air. You have all dominion, and to You be all the glory. In the precious name of Jesus, amen.
