Even though there is true evil in the world masquerading as good, there’s no comparison between God and Satan and his evil demons. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit have always been (John 1:1-2), “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (Jn 1:3) All things and beings were created by God, including the angels. Satan and one-third of the angels rebelled against God and were thrown out of heaven. Satan continues to rebel today and seeks to take many with him to the eternal lake of fire awaiting him, by the use of false prophets, as we discussed yesterday.

But God is greater than anything created. You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.” (1 Jn 4:4-6)

We need to understand that the devil and demons are more powerful than humans. Think of our world and all that it is going through in terms of agony, struggle, evil, violence, and heartache, with confusion abounding on every side. When we think of the violence, the passion, the tears, and the death with which our world is characterized, we can see something of the power of the enemy. This is why we’re told to “be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet 5:8).

On our own, there’s nothing we can do to overcome evil. We are only able to overcome evil and deception because of the surpassing greatness of the living Almighty God who dwells within us: “He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. There’s no contest or comparison between God and the devil.

Our eye of faith must always turn to God in hours of darkness, discomfort, or despair; turning to what the Scriptures reveal as the truth about God and how incomparably greater He is than anything that is present among or behind humans. “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, And You are exalted as head over all.” (1 Chron 29:11)

Our faith in Christ as our Lord and Savior makes us reborn as children of God. It is our faith and the indwelling Spirit within us that overcomes the things of this world. “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” (1 Jn 5:4) The means that our faith overcomes the world is in our humble submission to God’s Word. We must stand in His truth as we call upon Him to intervene here on earth for His glory.

His umbrella of power protects us as long as we are aligned under His absolute truth: “we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Rom 8:37). In Christ we are “complete… [because He] is the head of all principality and power” (Col 2:10). He has power over all–there’s nothing that can stand against Him: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom 8:31)

Father, when fear and anxiety creep into my heart and mind, I thank You that Jesus Christ is ready to carry my burden with me, and instead give me His peace and joy. Lord, You are the One who created all, the Almighty who cares for me. Father, how grateful I am that You have given Your Word to me. May I value it, read it, search it, and seek its wisdom in every relationship of life. Thank You for Your indwelling Spirit in me that reminds me that You are surpassingly greater than anything created. You are my refuge and my fortress, and I gladly take refuge under Your wings while You deliver me from evil. In the precious name of Jesus, I take captive every thought that is against Your truth. Amen.
