In order to reflect God’s heart, I’m learning the first thing I need to do is to guard my tongue, especially with my husband. “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (Ps. 141:3) Because, as we discussed last week, “The tongue has the power of life and death” (Prov. 18:21). If I am to show respect to my husband as I am commanded, I must speak life to him.
To reflect God’s heart, my words must be kind. “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.” (Prov. 31:26)
It is a choice we make many times each day as to what fruit will pour from our mouths. And it IS a choice, because we are no longer chained to sin. “From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be silenced. The lips of the righteous know what finds favor, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.” (Prov. 10:31-32)
The song in my head today is “Speak Life” by Toby Mac. These are the words in the song today that I will claim, as I choose to speak life:
Lift your head a little higher
Spread the love like fire
Hope will fall like rain
When you speak life with the words you say
Raise your thoughts a little higher
Use your words to inspire
Joy will fall like rain when you speak life with the things you say
So speak life, speak life
To the deadest darkest night
Speak life, speak life
When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why
Look into the eyes of the broken-hearted
Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope
You speak love, you speak life
