This morning I was reminded just how important it is to put others’ needs before our own. This month we’ve been teaching the story of Nehemiah to our kids ministry at church. Yesterday we concentrated on the part of the story where Nehemiah stopped the work on the wall to take care of others’ needs (Nehemiah 5:1-12).
As I was driving in traffic this morning watching the craziness of some of the drivers, I was reminded that I don’t know what is going on with anyone else unless they share it. And no matter my own need to hurry, perhaps someone else has something more pressing.
I was reminded of Paul’s words to the church of Philippi: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” (Phil 2:3-4)
As I walk through today, I will notice what is going on in others’ lives. As I taught the children yesterday, if I see something that needs to be done, I will step up and do it. No matter what is going on in their lives, I know they will see the heart of our Lord in my kindness. I won’t wait for someone else to help out. Let’s let the light of Christ shine through us today to a hurting and darkened world. They need His light!
