Have you ever heard the phrase “the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results”? That’s certainly one way to look at the passage we’ve been discussing the last few days. “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Gal. 6:7-9)
The Apostle Paul starts off by saying “do not be deceived”. In other words, do not be mislead, do not be trapped into wrong thinking by believing that you can trick or deceive God concerning the life you live, for our life is a open book before God.
The fruit which I reap will be consistent with the seed I have sown. I cannot live my life one way and expect to receive a different kind of reward. I cannot walk this earth the way I please and expect God to be pleased in the end.
What are you sowing? Is it the Word of God? Is it the love of God? Are you sowing your time, talent, resources in kingdom building? Are you praying for others, are you serving where there is a need? What is it that you are sowing?
Are you sowing to the flesh? Have you become your own God with your own truth? Are you living according to what is right in your own eyes? If so, my will, my way, my opinion, my truth, me, myself and I is what you are sowing. These kind of seeds that are sowed to the flesh will produce a corrupt harvest of destruction and separation in eternity.
This text is a warning and a reminder that I must watch what kind of seeds I am sowing and that I should remember that in all I am doing, I am sowing seeds and that I will reap the harvest of the seeds I have sown. Apple for apple and banana for banana, nothing different.
Have you convinced yourselves that you can live your life daily in disobedience, disrespect and rejection of God and His word and reap God’s heaven when we die? Do we truly believe that we can sow to the flesh and reap spiritual rewards once we transition from earth to eternity?
BE NOT DECEIVED! This is your warning to seek out truth that can only be found in God’s Word. We are free to make the choice, but we are NOT free from the consequences of the seeds we sow. Our results will be based on what we sow. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” (Gal. 6:9)
