Today (unfortunately) it has become more common place to spew hateful words, rather than those that will build others up and encourage them. But because of the work Jesus did on the cross, we have the ability in Christ to be righteous, holy and live as He did: “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Cor 5:21)

On my drive to work today, the song “Speak Life” by Toby Mac was playing. I felt a twinge in my heart as I remembered earlier this weak that my tongue seemed to be set on fire by hell. While I have apologized to the person on the receiving end, I had not yet repented to the Lord. A kind word can build you up. “The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense.” (Prov 10:20-21) A mean or hateful word can break your heart! “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.” (Jas. 3:6)

In order to “speak life” and with grace you need grace in your heart. “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (Col. 4:6) How do we do this? “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Eph 4:31-32) We depend on the Lord’s mighty strength to be able to put away the “old self” and put on the “new self”. To take off the old, we have to “be renewed in the spirit of your mind” (Eph. 4:23). How do we do this? We take every thought captive (2 Cor. 10:3-5), and we remember that we have “flowing rivers of living water [that] will flow from within” us from Jesus Himself.

Today I choose to “Speak Life” and let others see the love and grace of Jesus in my heart. I leave you with a portion of the lyrics to this song:

Some days the tongue gets twisted
Other days my thoughts just fall apart
I do, I don’t, I will, I won’t
It’s like I’m drowning in the deep

Well, it’s crazy to imagine
Words from my lips as the arms of compassion
Mountains crumble with every syllable
Hope can live or die

So speak life, speak life
To the deadest darkest night
Speak life, speak life
When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why
Look into the eyes of the broken hearted
Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope
You speak love, you speak
You speak life

Lift your head a little higher
Spread the love like fire
Hope will fall like rain
When you speak life with the words you say
Raise your thoughts a little higher
Use your words to inspire
Joy will fall like rain when you speak life with the things you say
