We are flawed, and the Lord knows it. No matter how much we love Him, we can all too easily forsake the love we had for Him at first. Just like the church at Ephesus, we can allow things that are going on in our lives take His rightful place of first in our lives, even if we are working for Him. “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.” (Rev. 2:4) He knows that even when we have good intentions of holding fast to Him, we allow other things, thoughts, duties, and feelings get in our way. “Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.” (Hosea 6:4b)
And yet, what He wants from us is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” (Deut 6:5) If we try and fail, which we will do, how do we love Him the way He wants us to? What is the remedy?
We turn back to Him, and He will help us. “The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love Him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.” (Deut 30:6) The Lord will “circumcise our hearts” which means He will give us an inward spiritual renewal. God wants to forgive us and bring us back to Himself. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ez. 36:26) All we have to do is turn to Him, and ask for His help.
