Do you ever feel overwhelmed? The Israelites felt overwhelmed by their task ahead. Enemy territory was terrifying and loomed large. But Caleb didn’t focus on the size of the problem; he focused on the greatness of God. Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, ‘We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.’ But the men who had gone up with him said, ‘We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are.'” (Num. 13:30-31)

Whether our enemy territory is a tough conversation we’re afraid to initiate, a pile of work that crushes us, or a bad habit we want to conquer, we often must acknowledge that the problem is stronger than we are. What a gift that on the heels of that realization comes an even more important truth. Jesus is bigger than any challenge. “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jer. 32:27)

He doesn’t leave us to fight battles alone. “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matt. 28:20b) Knowing that, we can say with Caleb, “We can certainly do it” as long as we depend on His power and not our own.  “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13)

As nothing is too difficult for our Lord, and He has promised to be with us always, we must trust in Him and His direction. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Prov. 3:5-6) When we are trusting in Him, He takes our anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed, “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 4:7)
