Thanks to the Lord, we don’t have to go through this day on our own power. Each of us affects the atmosphere, for good or bad, with our attitudes, actions, words, expressions, tone and body language. We can choose to add to whatever negativity we may encounter today and contribute to the world’s brokenness. Or we can do as our Savior tells us, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Mark 8:34)

If we live on our own power, our brokenness will come to drain us and those around us. On our own, our power will evaporate. But Jesus’s holiness lights us within and flows out for the benefit of others and ourselves. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 5:14-16)

So if we die to self, and allow the Holy Spirit’s power to come through us, it is His light that will shine before others. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23)

The Holy Spirit brings forth Christlike graces of character in the believer (Romans 14:17; 5:5). All real beauty of character–all real Christlikeness in us–is the Holy Spirit’s work. It is His “fruit.” He bears it, not us. So through our actions and sharing His love, we are letting our “light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matt 5:16)

Today, let’s die to our pride and our selfish desires, allow the Holy Spirit’s fruit to shine before to bring glory to our Father. We never know what the seeds we sow will bring forth; let’s sow seeds to the Lord! “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Rom. 15:13)
