We want the security of knowing what we value is protected and safe, whether people we care about or property we own. We don’t often think of our joy being rendered powerless, but how tragic would that be if Jesus didn’t secure lasting joy for us! His joy never yields to ice storms, hurricanes or any other disaster. “So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.” (John 16:22)
This time of year can bring us so much joy. Unfortunately for many, it also ushers in intense sadness. “The joy that Jesus came to bring is from outside of this world. It is the very joy that Jesus Himself has in God the Father–which He has had from all eternity and will have forever”, writes author Jon Piper. In this third week of Advent, we celebrate the joy Jesus ushered in. Jesus is Immanuel, “God with us,” at all times, in all things.
Jesus came to the earth to save all who will believe in Him by faith. He was born in a stable and was placed in a feeding trough. He wasn’t born behind palace walls; we all have access to Him. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.” (Rom. 5:1-2)
Today we look back with wonder that God came into the world, and we look forward to His return, expecting the great unceasing joy He has promised us. It is a joy that can never be taken away! “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Rom. 15:13)
