This morning the devotional I read is from a daily devotional from Tony Evans, “Time to Get Serious”. It spoke to me and gives me peace, which I long for after laying my Dad to rest yesterday. I hope it brings you peace, too.
I hope you get the idea by now that we are on the adventure of a lifetime when we pursue the knowledge of God. What we’ve learned about God should give us greater hunger to know Him more. If we’re satisfied with what we know about Him already, we’re of all people most miserable.
Did you know we’re going to spend eternity getting to know God? The essence of heaven is the uninterrupted knowledge of God. What will make heaven so wonderful is that there will always be something new to know about God. And we have so much to learn, and this knowledge will come at such supersonic speed that we will not have time to sleep.
Let me mention four practical benefits of knowing God. The first is obedience. Because you know God, you obey Him. You follow Him. You submit to Him. It’s obedient Christians who are blessed, not just smart ones.
Second, knowing God brings peace. “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;” (2 Peter 1:2) The more you know God, the more at peace you should be. Yes, negative circumstances do come, but even in these times you can have a growing sense of inner peace if your knowledge of God is growing.
Third, knowing God gives us wisdom. Paul prayed that God would give the Ephesians “a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him” (Eph. 1:17) The better you know God, the better the decisions you make.
Fourth, the knowledge of God brings freedom. In Galations 4:8, Paul writes, “when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods.” When you lack the assurance and confidence that comes from knowing Him and from knowing who you are in Him, you can become a slave to what people think, to circumstances, to your emotions, to other people’s rules and expectations — to almost anything.
Search your heart today and make sure that you have a healthy and growing desire to know God. If you really want to know God, no power on earth can stop you! And God has promised to reveal Himself to those who seek Him.
