We ended yesterday’s post with: “God want us to depend on Him, and not ourselves. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5) When we seek Him first and ask Him to light our path and direct our steps, we are dying to ourselves and living in God’s grace. His power and grace can overrule our situations. God’s grace will give us victory where we didn’t have victory. Grace will give us power where we didn’t have power. Grace will give us the ability to keep on keeping on when we want to give up.” Today, I want to dig further into asking Him to direct my steps.
God desires to be intimately and constantly involved in every area of our lives, and it is His delight. “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) When we give everything over into His hands and submit to His will and purpose, we will be amazed at what He will do and where He will lead us. When we follow God we can be sure that we walk on solid ground. For though we might stumble over things that come our way, if we trust and follow the Lord, He will take our hand and keep us on our feet and our feet on the path.
The way of the ungodly is strewn with pits and traps, many that they have made themselves and they will eventually fall into them and not be able to get out (Psalm 7:15-16 & 9:15, Proverbs 26:27). But as we follow God, He will direct our steps so that, “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21). He may not show us more than the very next step. But, because He knows and designed it all, all we have to do is let Him lead us – through the joy that makes us rejoice and the trials that make us stronger, each one is a step in the path for His glory. But we must ask Him to direct our steps, listen to His guidance, and wait for Him to show us where He wants us to go.
When His will is our genuine desire and we will truly acknowledge Him in all our ways, we can be sure that God will show us the way. “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. (Proverbs 3:6) He does this not only for the “big” decisions in life – but, if we are willing, He will also do this for every single step along the way for “He delights in every detail of (our) lives.” His plans don’t just cover our major decisions – spouse, job, home – but He plans out every moment. Scripture says, “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:16) God is completely sovereign, He is in absolute control of everything at all times and He will give us direction every moment if we are open to it.
Why is He willing to do this? “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) On the way home from work yesterday, I was listening to the radio broadcast by Dr. Tony Evans, “Created to Rule with a Purpose (Vol 2)”, where he discussed this subject. I highly encourage you to listen to this when you can.
I’m so grateful to have a sovereign God who cares so much about each and every one of us – enough so that He even wants to help us with the small details of our lives. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will—to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the One He loves.” (Eph. 1:3-6)
